Storm Track Disinformation: Honor Killings? You Must Be Misinformed

You’re Muslim girl. You fall in love. You deserve to die.

That’s the reason a Muslim father beat his daughter to death two weeks ago after becoming infatuated with a British soldier in Basra. The father, Abdel-Qader Ali, explained why he is unrepentant - and how police backed his actions.

For Abdel-Qader Ali there is only one regret: that he did not kill his daughter at birth. 'If I had realised then what she would become, I would have killed her the instant her mother delivered her,' he said with no trace of remorse.

OK. This story is old news. What’s also old news is that honor killings are a staple of the Islamic faith.

So it seems obvious. Right?

Well not according to the Guardian that ran this story on the same day.

'Honour' killings are often assumed to be sanctioned by Islam since they occur most commonly in the Middle East and as the perpetrators cite religious justification for their acts. But nowhere in the Koran or Hadith (traditions about the life of Muhammad) is there a scripture or text that legitimises 'honour' killing, and Muslim leaders say it is forbidden.

The practice is said to pre-date Islam and Christianity and was born out of tribal culture. 'Honour' killings are carried out by members of the victim's immediate family to cleanse the family 'honour' after a female member brings 'shame' to it.

Then why this.

Abdel-Qader, 46, a government employee, was initially arrested but released after two hours. Astonishingly, he said, police congratulated him on what he had done. 'They are men and know what honour is,' he said.

There is little justice for women in Islam.

  • It is of course true that honour killings occur in the Muslim community - and it is far from condemned - but persons belonging to other religious communities also commit honour killings. They are known to occur amongst the Yazidis in northern Iraq, and amongst Christians in other countries in the Middle East, such as Lebanon.

Further, there is nothing to indicate that the police officers who allegedly congratulated the man were Muslims also. So why quote it as though it does?

  • So I guess you are okay with honor killings then, deliriousbats?

    Interesting.

Let's see. Today, Iraqi Christians make up less than three percent of the population. And the ones that are left are pretty much cowering in their homes and afraid to go out. Moslems are such great neighbors in the grand multi-culti scheme of things, aren't they? Anywho! I think WC makes a safe bet when he concludes the police officers were Moslems. The numbers are with him on this one.

Also, just for the record, I condemn ALL honor killings. Given that, I'd sure be interested in any links on Christian honor killings you may have.

WC is right. There is little justice for women in Islam.

  • These crimes occur in the subcontinent, too, among Hindus and Sikhs. But the majority of the cases of dishonor killings per annum occur in Arab/Muslim countries and in Arab/Muslim immigrant communities elsewhere.

In modern times, the only Christian dishonor killings of which I'm aware are ones involving interfaith couples (e.g., Christian and Muslim).
